Johanna Phillips

Johanna Phillips is an only child who grew up in Mill Creek, Washington and attended Cascade High School. She lost the election to be Senior Class President but was still able to join Leadership class that year which has proved pivotal in her life’s arc. She was a Washington Scholar and U.S. Presidential Scholar in 1997, getting to meet President Clinton in the White House. She loved attending summer camp as a kid and later worked as a camp counselor for five summers, which is where her love of teaching and leadership began. She left that job in order to be a river rafting guide for several summers. She studied History at the University of Washington, earned her M.Ed. from The George Washington University, and began teaching high school history in 2003. In 2010 she became the Activity Coordinator and Leadership teacher at Shorecrest High School - which pretty much means that she now gets to fulfill her dream of being a professional camp counselor. She was selected as the 2019 Washington State High School Activity Coordinator of the Year for her leadership in the field, in particular with regards to bringing an equity lens and push into the work of student activities. She is a single mom raising three amazing kids in grades 1, 5, and 6: Reed, Charlotte and Edison. During remote learning all four of them have been teaching and learning at home, with Johanna’s teaching station being the dresser in her bedroom. When not teaching, you’ll find her hanging with her kids: skiing, hiking, swimming, and rafting.
